After God created the universe in six days, He has been arranging marriages
ever since.
40 Days before a male child is conceived a voice from Heaven announces whose daughter
he is to marry
(in Yiddish, such a “heavenly match”
is called “bashert”, a word meaning
“destiny”).
In former days the steps leading to a marriage proposal were arranged by shadkhan,
matchmaker.
--In modern
usage, Jewish singles will say that they are looking for their bashert, meaning they are looking for that person who will
complement them perfectly, and whom they will complement perfectly.
--A more useful
term than "bashert" might be "zvug," A "zvug" is
a true (and only) life partner, the person who actually completes the other.
